CMSE Jazz Band- 7th & 8th Grade


Music Academy / Group Music Courses -
Fall 2024

Jazz band is a great extra-curricular elective where you are able to explore an important American music tradition. You will be exposed to the many styles of jazz influenced music including: the blues, swing, be-bop, Latin-jazz, funk, rock and more! Jazz band is a great way to improve your musicianship skills on your instrument, play different styles of music, and learn about improvisation! ALL BAND INSTRUMENTS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN JAZZ BAND! If you play guitar, bass, piano or drum set this is a great opportunity for you to enhance your musicianship on those instruments. This course is for 7th and 8th grade students at Chaska Middle School East.

Performances

  • District Jazz Festival - Feb. 1st @ Chaska High School - All afternoon and evening
  • Showcase of Talent - March 11 @ Chaska Middle School East - Coincides with Band Concert, time TBD
  • University of Minnesota Duluth Jazz Festival - March 22nd - All day trip, possible overnight stay, additional fees will apply)
  • CMSE Jazz Concert - March 25th, 5:30pm

Matthew Potter

Matt Potter teaches 6th-8th grade band with District 112 at Chaska Middle School East. Matt has his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music education from University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. Matt’s primary instruments are the saxophone and the piano, but Matt teaches lessons for all woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. In addition to teaching, Matt still frequently performs with two rock bands and at a church. Matt believes middle school music students should have the opportunities to perform, create and listen to many styles of music.
