Jennifer Klukken

Jenny Klukken is an active percussionist, composer, and educator in the Twin Cities. She primarily performs as an innovative marimbist, fusing genres and pushing the boundaries of the instrument. In 2012, she co-founded a percussion quartet called Matra that performs original works inspired by world and jazz music. Today, Matra is a grant-winning ensemble that has recently released its first full length album of original music (available on iTunes and Spotify). Jenny also performs in a genre-blending Brazilian jazz trio with singer/guitarist Robert Everest and drummer Andrew Turpening. In February 2017, Jenny won a grant through the McKnight Foundation for the trio to perform a 4 part concert series in the Twin Cities area. Also in 2017, she was awarded the very competitive Next Step Grant through the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council to study marimba and composition in Paris with legendary percussionist Eric Sammut. Jenny is endorsed by Marimba One of Arcata California, and is the first and only ambassador of the instruments in Minnesota.

Jenny grew up in central Minnesota and now calls Minneapolis her home after completing her degree in Percussion Performance at the University of Minnesota. In 2013, Jenny became the first female percussion instructor at the 108-year old community music school, The MacPhail Center for Music, where she also teaches percussion lessons. She also offers lessons through Community Education at Chanhassen High School.

Jenny strives to incorporate an understanding of the foundations of music, technical skills, and an appreciation for many genres into her teaching. She believes that each student should pursue music that excites them, while learning foundational concepts along the way. Percussion lessons include instruction on: marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, snare drum, timpani, and other auxiliary instruments.
